George Kelly Butler

We celebrate the life of George Kelly Butler, age 61, who passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on November 19, 2024. Kelly was born on July 11, 1963 at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. At different times in his life, Kelly lived in Repton and Selma, Alabama, Texarkana, Tokyo, Riverside California and Bossier City, Louisiana until settling in Prattville where Kelly graduated high school in 1981. He earned his undergraduate degree from Auburn University Montgomery and his MBA from Troy University Montgomery. Kelly’s 36-year career with the State of Alabama included positions as Account Clerk, Revenue Examiner, Legislative Analyst, State Budget Director, Acting State Finance Director and retiring as State Finance Director under Governor Ivey. In these positions, he earned much respect for his hard work and knowledge. Although he was successful in his career, his greatest accomplishment was being a husband to his loving wife of 34 years, Beverly, and a father to his 3 kids, Ashley (Cory) Stephens, Hannah Butler, and Donovan (Joli) Butler. He loved being Papa to his granddaughter, Masyn Kelly Stephens. They cherish the memories made, lessons learned, and time spent together enjoying board games, Braves games, Auburn sports, running, golfing and being outdoors. His faith was an important part of him, and he strived to let that guide his daily activities. Kelly is also survived by 2 sisters, Dianne (Jimmy) Eiland and Becky (Danny) Lee and 1 brother, Scott (Kathy) Butler and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Butler and Patricia Butler. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 12 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Prattville with Dr. Travis Coleman and Rodney Arp officiating. Burial will follow at Prattville Memory Gardens with Prattville Memorial directing. The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Pallbearers will be Erik Tucker, James Goude, Kevin Weir, Jared Thompson, Josh Thompson and Jason Thompson. The family would like to thank the ALS Clinic at UAB and Dr. Mohammed Kazamel and the awesome Mia Davis for their excellent care and guidance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association-Alabama or Prattville First Baptist Send Offering.
