CANNON, Buford Mullis, 87 - The family announces the death of Buford, lovingly known as Papa, on Saturday, January 14, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Allen Cannon and his parents Big Mama and Big Daddy Cannon. Of his five siblings, he is survived by his brother Bill Cannon (Jeanne) of Fayetteville, TN. Buford is also survived by his daughter, Kay Cannon Newton (Tommy), and son, Buford Allen Cannon; his three grandchildren, Robb Newton (Kim), George Newton (Sybil), and Sarah Newton Barker (Zack); and his eight great grandchildren, Adair, Richard, Ross, William, Will, Lucas, James, and Thomas. Buford served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in Italy. After the war, Buford completed his undergraduate studies in Agricultural Economics at the University of Georgia, ultimately obtaining a Masters Degree in Agricultural Engineering from Virginia Tech. He taught at North Carolina State, and began a career with Ralston Purina in 1955 until his retirement in 1991. Buford was active in his community, serving as President of the Lions Club and a respected Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Prattville. While those who knew him will certainly remember Papa's remarkable skills in the kitchen, the unconditional love he always gave to his family and friends will be missed above all. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Prattville Memorial with Pastors Travis Coleman and Bryant Hansen officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 138 South Washington Street, Prattville, AL 36067, or alternatively to the Prattville YMCA, P.O. Box 680009, Prattville, AL 36068.
